Mohair is tough by nature — it's what kept our animals warm through Karoo winters long before it became your blanket. With a little care, it'll outlast most things in your home.
Everyday care
Shake it out and air it in the shade every few weeks. Mohair is naturally resistant to dust and odour, so it needs less washing than you'd think.
Washing
Hand wash in cool water with a gentle wool detergent, or dry clean if you'd rather not risk it. Never wring it — press the water out gently and lay flat to dry, away from direct sun.
Bouclé finish
The looped bouclé texture can snag on rough surfaces or velcro — keep it away from anything that might catch the loops. A light brushing with a soft-bristle brush keeps the texture looking full.
Brushed finish
Brushed mohair sheds a little in the first few uses — this is normal and settles down. Shake it outdoors before its first wash.
Storage
Fold rather than hang, store somewhere dry, and avoid plastic bags — mohair needs to breathe. A cotton storage bag or pillowcase works well.
